AIMA residency in Portugal: what to prepare in 2026
Getting an appointment with AIMA can feel like the hardest part of the whole process. Here's how to prepare your file so nothing slows you down.
AIMA (Agência para a Integração, Migrações e Asilo) is the Portuguese authority that handles residence permits since it replaced SEF. Whether you are applying for the first time, renewing, or responding to a notification, the same principle applies: a complete, well-organised file is what keeps your process moving.
1. Get your base documents in order first
Before anything else, make sure you already hold the essentials that almost every residency route requires:
- NIF, your Portuguese tax number.
- NISS, your social security number, when your route requires it.
- Proof of accommodation, a rental contract or accommodation declaration.
- Criminal record certificate, from your country of origin, translated and legalised.
- Proof of income or means of subsistence.
Documents issued abroad usually need an apostille and a certified Portuguese translation. This is the step that most often causes delays, so start it early.
2. Understand which appointment you actually need
Not every step requires the same channel. Some cases are handled through the standard administrative route, while others, particularly after a notification or a refusal, may require a different procedure or even a court-based route. Sending the right request to the right place saves weeks.
3. Don't ignore an AIMA notification
If you receive an Audiência Prévia (intention to refuse) or a final decision, the clock starts immediately. You typically have a limited window to respond with arguments and supporting evidence. A well-prepared response at this stage can turn a refusal around, but only if it is submitted in time and addresses the exact grounds raised.
4. Keep a copy of everything
Every submission, every confirmation email, every reference number. If you ever need to escalate or appeal, this trail is what protects you.
